Inhaled Entonox can be used in any situation that requires analgesia with a fast onset and offset, including emergency care. The low solubility of nitrous oxide in biological tissue and fluid means that Entonox results in rapid pain relief and elimination of the gas from the lungs. A further safety feature is the composition of an inhaled mixture of 50% nitrous oxide and oxygen to preventhypoxia during administration.
Entonox is administered by inhalation, so there is no need to insert acannulaor set up an intravenous line. This means that this form of analgesia does not need to be administered by specialist anaesthetist, but can be administered by trained staff including paramedics.
